The General Alphabetical Authors/Titles Catalogue (GAC) of books
The General Alphabetical Authors/Titles Catalogue (GAC) of books represents the main part of NLR reference, incorporating catalogues of books, periodicals and serials, graphic and cartographic publications, standards and other technical documents, author`s published in Russian, Ukrainian, Byelorussian, and in foreign European languages. The General Authors/Titles catalogue contains bibliographic entries for books in the main Library collection, including those appearing in special catalogues (in the Central Reference Library, "Rossica" and "Polygraphy" collections, Art Prints and National Literature).
The GAC is currently converted to electronic form by card scanning with subsequent conversion to text- and machine-readable catalogue formats. Library users can access the scanned GAC by searching the local network. The Library also provides a GAC copy on microfiche.
Russian books published from 1980 also appear in the NLR electronic catalogue providing access by individual authors and corporate body names, titles, subject headings and some other access points.
1. General Alphabetical Authors/Titles Catalogue of Books in Russian
Chronological range: from 1725 to the present time. Contains bibliographic records for books, periodicals and serials, graphic and cartographic publications, technical standards and other technical documents, author's abstracts of dissertations. The catalogue includes some records of books that are not in the Library, with the cards marked by "Desiderat…". Early-printed and Slavonic-script books, Braille, music, maps (sheet) and newspapers are excluded (see catalogued in the special divisions).
Filing is alphabetical by personal and corporate body names and titles. About 7.5 mil. cards. Including main and added entries under heading or title, and references. The scanned part is available though NLR's local network.
2. General Alphabetical Authors/Titles Catalogue of Books in Ukrainian
Started in 1931. Chronological range: from late 18th century to the present. Contains bibliographic records for books, periodicals and serials, graphic, standards and technical documents, author's abstracts of dissertations. Filing as in Russian GAC. About 266 000 cards.
3. General Alphabetical Authors/Titles Catalogue of Books in Byelorussian
Started in 1931. Chronological range: from mid-19th century to the present. Contains bibliographic records for books, periodicals and serials, graphic, standards and technical documents, author's abstracts of dissertations. Filing as in Russian GAC. About 384 000cards.
4. General Alphabetical Authors/Titles Catalogue of Books in Foreign European Languages
Started in 1931. Chronological range: from 1501 to the present. Contains bibliographic records for books, periodicals and serials, graphic, standards and technical documents, dissertations. Total 1.875.600 cards. Filing is alphabetical by personal and corporate body names and titles in the five sets:

- Macedonian
- Servo-Croatian (Cyrillic)
- Finnish
- other European languages together

1. General Alphabetical Authors/Titles Catalogue of Periodicals and Serials in Russian, Ukrainian and Byelorussian
Started in 1931. Chronological range: from 1501 to the present. Contains BRs for periodicals in Russian, Ukrainian and Byelorussian. Filing is alphabetical by corporate body names and titles. Total about 512 000 cards.
2. General Alphabetical Authors/Titles Catalogue of Periodicals and Serials in Foreign European Languages
Started in 1932. Chronological range: from 1501 to the present. Contains bibliographic records for periodicals in foreign European languages. Filing is alphabetical by corporate body names and titles in the three sets:
- Roman-script
- Greek
- Cyrillic
About 350 000 cards.
In three parts.
Part 1. Started in 1931. Chronological range: from 1725 for publications in Russian; from the earliest civil-script prints (late 18th - early 19th-century) for the Ukrainian and Byelorussian; from the 16th century for foreign European languages. Total 9 mil cards.
Contains bibliographic records for books, periodicals and serials, graphic, standards and technical documents, author's abstracts of dissertations and material catalogued collectively.
Using BBK (Libriry-bibliographic classification) tables for research libraries.
Part 2. Started in 1812. Chronological range: from 1812 to 1909. Total 255.162 cards. Contains bibliographic records for books and periodicals in the following sections: Russian history (pre-revolutionary period), Russian law, religion, economics, medicine, natural sciences, fiction, arts, library science, book studies, periodicals, book and print, education, military science, auxiliary historical disciplines, published in Russian, Ukrainian and Byelorussian. Presented in classification schemes devised by the NLR.
Part 3. Contains records for foreign European languages. Started in 1812. Chronological range: from the 16th century to 1928. Total 791.298 cards. Bibliographic records for books and periodicals in the sections: philosophy, psychology, history, law, religion, natural sciences, geography, medicine, linguistics, pedagogy, education, fiction, arts, library science, science studies, book studies, printing trades, astronomy, mathematics, mechanics, chemistry and military science. Using original NLR classification schemes.
Chronological range: from 1928 to 2005.
In two sets:
- Subject catalogue for publications in Russian from 1931.
- Subject catalogue for publications in foreign European languages from 1918.
Both sets filed alphabetically by subject headings in Russian.
Search in the NLR electronic catalogue provided for Russian books published from 1980.
The subject catalogue contains bibliographic records for books, periodicals, serials, standards and technical documents, author's abstracts of dissertations, microfilms, together with reference references system.
Total amount about 5 mil. cards.
Auxiliary resources - Subject headings card file including subject headings and references totaling over 1 mil. 200 000 cards. In addition, currently available in electronic format (NLR Subject Headings Authority File)
