Help on Searching

  • Enter your search information in the search box displayed at the top of the screen. You can type in your search query, using both English and Russian words and phrases.

You can put as many words as you like into the box. The simplest search consists of a single word. More complex searches involve two or more words, separated by a space. The search term can also be a phrase from anywhere on this website. The search will look for these words, and will return a list of the most relevant items.

Case does not matter. It makes no difference whether you type all in upper case, all in lower case, or a mixture of the two.

Searches include the full text of documents linked to by web pages. We perform the full text search that looks for your terms in every word of every web page.

You can use Boolean operators with your search terms.

  • Search words or phrases may be combined using Boolean operators: and, or, not.

    • and returns results that include both terms (example: manuscript and western).
    • or returns results that include either term (example: dissertations or theses).
    • not returns results that include the first term and not the second term (example: recorded not sound).

Note: and, or, not must be typed in lower case when combining terms.

If you do not specify an operator, the search engine uses the Boolean and operator to join the search terms you entered.

  • Truncation: It is possible to truncate a search term using *(asterisk) to stand for any number of letters, as long as you enter at least 3 characters before the truncation symbol. Enter an initial part of the word and then the asterisk (*).
    For example:

However, the search engine fails to perform searches if a truncated word contains less than 3 letters or *(asterisk) is placed before the truncated word.
