National Library of Russia Subject Headings Authority File

NLR SHAF basing on the country's only SH list (card file), of unique range and comprehensive content. Almost a million SHs listed with extensive reference and information material.

The file contains SHs for post-1931 documents in Russian and post-1928 in foreign European languages. No chronological limits for personalia.

The subject range is versatile, covering all fields of knowledge: natural and mathematical sciences, engineering and technology, social sciences, economics and culture, art studies in the broad sense, etc.

The following SH categories are represented: personal and family names, corporate names, geographic names, uniform titles (also in name combinations), thematic concepts (including ethnic and linguistic).

Complex SHs filed by content and minute subdivisions in NLR subject catalogue. The reference/cross-reference system ensures consistent subject indexing.

Subject cataloguers can use the file for all publication types (monographs, collections, reference and bibliographic aids, periodicals and serials, etc.). If required in specific bibliographic DBs, subject headings can be defined for analytical BDs (bibliographic descriptions). Consistent subject indexing using controlled SHs ensures optimal subject search in bibliographic DBs.

Authority data display format accounting for national subject cataloguing practices, incorporating SHAF control and support mechanisms. In particular, providing for simple SHs with their paradigmic (hierarchical and associative) relationships, compatibility in complex SHs, required source information, along with compiling and updating a standardized complex SH list. All subject headings basing on the BBK and NLR procedures.

NLR SHAF controlled and supported by expert specialists of NLR Cataloging Department class- and subject indexing section. Task commission for subject indexing and subject cataloguing together with authority control section responsible for general executive support.

The subject headings file is updated at regular intervals. Annual additions amount to 12 tho entries. With daily updating, cumulative additions and revisions will be prepared on a quarterly basis.

NRL SHAF is distributed in Russian communications format for authority data.

Software support in DBMS FOXPRO for DOS, Version 2.6, allowing for conversion to ISO format.
