Along the Banks of the Volga River

Masterpieces of the Russian photography from the second half of the 19th century
in the collection of the National Library of Russia in Saint Petersburg.

This collection contrasts with large format photographs created by Maxim Dmitriyev, one of the most prominent Russian artists, during his voyages on a special steamer from the late 1880s to the early 1890s. The photographs became known as The Volga Collection and made their author famous. Like his teachers - M. Nastyukov and A. Karelin, - Maxim Dmitriyev took photographs of his native Volga, its nature, its towns, villages and monasteries.
