Ivan (Jean) Raoult, who came from France but lived and worked in Russia for a long time, also used theatrical approach when making his ethnographic photographs that depicted the Tatar and the Cheremis people who lived in Nizhny Novgorod in the late 1870s. Raoult skillfully arranged different scenes against the real natural background; he used with good effect the exotic character of national costumes and common utensils. His devices helped him create the images, the structure and subject of which were more pictorial than photographic.
