Boris Fedorovich Volodin died during his term as board member of Bibliotheca Baltica on May 16, 2005, at the age of 54, from a grave and prolonged illness. He was a founding members of our organization and delivered papers for each of Bibliotheca Baltica's seven symposia, giving his colleagues thorough informations of the development in Russia in respect to the conference themes. It would have been a great pleasure for him to help with organizing a Bibliotheca Baltica Symposium hosted by his home library.

Boris Volodin had been working at the National Library of Russia, in the Research Department of Library Science, for almost a quarter of a century. As one of the leading specialists on international comparative studies in the fields of library science and library history, he was one of the most actives representatives of his country on international conferences and in international organisations.

In order to commemorate his engagement for the cooperation of libraries in the Baltic Sea Area, Bibliotheca Baltica working group decided to issue the Boris Volodin Memorial Travel Grant. It is designed to enable younger librarians from Bibliotheca Baltica's member countries to participate in its subsequent symposium - now the IXth International Symposium "Bibliotheca Baltica" in the National Library of Russia, St. Petersburg, October 22 through 25, 2008. The grant will cover the long distance travel costs and the hotel costs, leaving local travel costs and day allowance to the benefiting person to take care of. Applicants should hand in an approximately 4 DIN A 4 page essay in which they state their own professional view on the general theme of this symposium: "What does the symposium's theme mean to your personal professional attitude and what interest would you have when participating?"

Deadline for applications is August 15, 2008. The board of Bibliotheca Baltica will make the decision. The detailed call for papers will be published on this website as soon as the program of the symposium is finalized.
